the Convict as well as the Local Prison service and who has held the rank of Principal Warder in the former service if possible. The Salary which I recommended should be paid to the Warden of the Gaol in my letter of the 6th April last to the Chairman of the Retrenchment Committee, viz. $120 per mensem with annual increments of $4 per mensem for 5 years, should be sufficient

I think to attract an officer of experience.

I trust that no time may be lost in endeavouring to obtain a suitable officer from the Home Prison Service to fill the post.

Enclosure 2.

618

Report by the Superintendent of Victoria Gaol.

The Warden (and appointment which coincides with that of Chief Warder in a home prison) holds a very responsible position in the Gaol and his responsibility will be increased if the Police and Gaol departments are brought under one head. But putting this last point aside, the staff from various reasons has got into such a deplorable state, it is absolutely necessary that the officer appointed now to fill the post of Warden should be one having considerable experience and one who can be trusted.
